Two kinds of day carry more travellers through India than anything else: a half-day loop of Mughal and colonial Delhi, and the long run down to Agra and back. Here they are, starting with the one that carries the most.

The fixed points

The Taj, the forts and the food streets: India’s fixed points.

A marble tomb that changes colour with the hour, a fort the shade of dried blood, a lane off Chandni Chowk where one family has fried the same paratha for a century. Most India itineraries are built around these, and each one books differently.

The Taj day

The Taj Mahal: the trip is really about the 230km before it.

★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 4,304 travellers on the busiest Agra run

Almost nobody stays in Agra. The choice is how you cross the gap from Delhi: a car leaving in the dark, a reserved seat on the Gatimaan Express, or an overnight so the gate opens on you and not the coach park.

First light

At the gate before it opens

12–14 hours· leaves Delhi ~02:00· sunrise entry

The marble goes from grey to pink to white in about forty minutes, and the crowd arrives at the end of it. This is the version worth losing a night’s sleep for.

By car

Taj, Agra Fort and the Baby Taj

10–12 hours· private car· two forts included

The standard shape: the mausoleum first, Agra Fort across the river bend where Shah Jahan spent his last years, and Itimad-ud-Daulah’s inlaid tomb on the way out.

By rail

Down on the fast train, back by dusk

~100 min each way· reserved seats· guide in Agra

The Gatimaan and Shatabdi services turn the drive into a breakfast and a nap. Seats are allocated, so this is the version that has to be settled before you fly.

Delhi

Delhi is two cities and each one wants its own morning.

Mughal Delhi is the Jama Masjid steps, Kinari Bazaar by rickshaw and a plate eaten standing up. Imperial Delhi is wide avenues, India Gate and Humayun’s tomb going gold at closing time. Most sightseeing days cover both; the good ones do not rush the first half.

The first three cities

The Golden Triangle, and where people go after it.

Rajasthan

Rajasthan colour-codes its cities and means it.

Pink Jaipur, blue Jodhpur, white Udaipur, gold Jaisalmer — four palettes, four forts still standing over the rooftops, and a week that ends on a camel in the Thar if you plan it that way.

Mumbai

Mumbai gives up far more on foot than through a windscreen.

Colaba’s arcades and the Gateway at high water, the dhobi ghat sheets drying in rows, Dharavi’s recycling lanes, and the hour-long ferry out to the rock-cut caves on Elephanta Island. The distances look big on a map and walk small.

India only

A tiger, a river at dawn, and a city inside a city.

Forts and food tours run right across Asia. A morning in Dharavi, a jeep in Ranthambore and the lamp fires on the Ganges belong to India alone.

A city inside a city

The Dharavi Morning

Roughly a square mile of central Mumbai holds close to a million people and an informal economy running into the hundreds of millions: potters firing in Kumbharwada, tanners, and a recycling trade that takes apart a large share of the city’s plastic. The operators worth booking ban cameras, hire guides who grew up in the lanes, and put part of the fee back into the neighbourhood.

Most of the world’s tigers

The Ranthambore Jeep

India holds the large majority of the wild tigers left on earth, and Ranthambore’s lake edges and ruined fort walls are where they are seen most often. Drives run at dawn and mid-afternoon, the zone you get is allocated rather than chosen, and the reserves shut through the monsoon.

Fire on the water

The Varanasi Dawn

Varanasi has been lived in continuously for thousands of years and the entire city turns to face the river. At dusk the Ganga aarti fills Dashashwamedh Ghat with lamp smoke, bells and a crowd standing in the shallows; before six the same steps belong to bathers, and the rowing boats push off in the dark to meet the sun.

Settle before you fly

Book these before you land in India.

Most of the country can be arranged from the hotel desk the night before. These cannot. They run on park permits, reserved rail seats and a monument that shuts one day a week.

  1. 01Taj Mahal Sunrise, Baby Taj & Agra Fort Day TourThe Taj closes to visitors every Friday, and a sunrise slot needs the ticket in hand before you reach the gate.
  2. 02Taj Mahal & Agra Tour by Gatimaan Express TrainSeats on the fast Delhi–Agra services are reserved and allocated; there is no useful walk-up on the day.
  3. 03Golden Triangle & Ranthambore: 4-Day Private Tour from DelhiSafari zones are issued by permit ahead of the drive, and the reserves close through the monsoon months.
  4. 043-Days Private Golden Triangle Tour: Delhi, Agra & Jaipur by CarThree to five days of car, driver and hotels: the operators worth having are committed weeks out.
Monsoon plans

When the monsoon lands, book a kitchen instead of a fort.

The rain reaches Kerala in early June and works north through July; in Mumbai it is total for weeks. Every good answer is under a roof — a home kitchen in Udaipur, a spice market under awnings, a cave temple cut into a hillside, a block-printing bench. None of them cancel for weather.
